Capacity management

Capacity Management
Network Access is responsible for all train scheduling and network control functions on the QR network, and for ensuring that the network is used to its full potential.

The number of trains that may operate on the network on a given day depends on several factors including:

  • Train lengths and weights
  • Environmental concerns, and
  • Track conditions.

All these factors are considered when a rail operator applies for access to a train path (or particular section of the network). Other considerations are sometimes necessary:

  • If the train path is operating at capacity, the access seeker may propose an alternative train path.
  • When two operators want to use the same train path, Network Access will expand the network if this is financially viable. If not, capacity is given to the operator whose services provide the most advantages to the commercial performance of the network.
