Overview

QR’s Network Access business manages access to Australia’s largest rail network.

The Australian rail industry is open to competition and in Queensland, rail operators can apply to use QR’s 9,500km of narrow gauge, standard gauge and dual gauge track. They can apply to run trains on the network’s metropolitan commuter system, the regional freight and tourist lines, the heavy haul tracks of the state’s rich coal and mineral deposits, and the interstate track between the NSW border and Brisbane.

Queensland’s vast rail network is owned by QR and supported by state of the art infrastructure and systems. The rail network is valued at some $AUD3.8 billion.

Network Access’ main roles are to:

  • Manage access to QR’s rail network
  • Manage the infrastructure assets that make up the network, and
  • Manage operations on the network.

At Network Access, we work closely with industry to create new opportunities for rail and for all those who use rail. The driving goal behind our business is to ensure that rail captures the largest possible share of Queensland’s total transport market and remains a strong viable industry.
